BANKING VEHICLES INTO or THROUGH TIGHT SPACES

OVERVIEW:
There are a number of things to consider to safety ‘Bank a Vehicle into or through Tight Spaces’ and whilst you are ‘Banksman’ trained, at times the following guidelines have not been followed, and accidents have occurred.

GUIDELINES:
-
Identify the space or opening vehicles are likely to use and determine if there are any obstacles or obstructions that may impact the moveability of the vehicle i.e. width of space, turning circles, barriers, gates, posts and/or pedestrian movement etc – ensure any obstacles or obstructions are brought to the attention of the event organiser and safety officer.
-
Identity the best way for all types of vehicles to turn into the space, bearing in mind a 40’ artic type’s moveability is different from a 20 tons, 3 axled rigid and a van/car is different again.

MUST:
-
Speak with the driver prior to starting the manoeuvre of any vehicle and determine whether the driver has the confidence to manoeuvre the vehicle into the space required, if not, reconsider your options.
-
Tell the driver to follow your instructions and if at any time he/she cannot see you, to immediately stop the manoeuvre.
-
Ensure all other vehicle, cyclists and pedestrian movements are stopped prior to asking the driver to move forward or reverse into the space required.
-
Ensure at least 2 banksman are used for this manoeuvre, one at the front of the vehicle and the other at the back, with the lead banksman, who has control of the vehicle being the one managing the direction of the vehicle i.e. forward or backwards.
-
Bring the vehicle forward or in the reverse direction at a walking pace of no more than 5 mph and slow down further when it comes to entering the tight space.
-
Ensure both the front and rear banksman are looking to see if the vehicle is liable to hit or come in contact with any obstacle or obstruction – IF AT ANYTIME IT LOOKS AS IF THE VEHICLE MAY HIT OR COME INTO CONTACT WITH ANY OBSTACLE OR OBSTRUCTION, ALL MOVEMENT IS TO CEASE AND THE VEHICLE BROUGHT TO A STAND-STILL.
-
Explain situation to the driver, re-positioning the vehicle and start again.
-
Immediately report any accident or mishap to the event organiser and safety officer and complete an INCIDENT FROM on PARIM.
